Cradle Mountain / Overland Track    April 2016

Walk review from Rhonda , Cradle Mountain / Overland Track Tasmania

What an amazing experience, walking for 6 days in the wilderness.

It is hard adjusting back to normal life in this parallel universe.

Knowing that this year I was turning 64, and travelling solo, committing to the walk was harder than the walk. I am so glad I did, and I am glad I trained for it, although suburban streets do not prepare you for the natural parts of the track, the rocky water courses, the masses of exposed roots.

Cradle Mountain Huts is a highly professional but highly personal organisation, from the time I first emailed, to the bus drivers taking us to and from the start and finish of the track, but my highest praise is for the delightful young men who guided our walk, Tom and Nick. Both are passionate about the wilderness and walking, as well as excellent cooks, cleaners and dishwashers. They were both intelligent and good fun. It was hard to believe these two had not met previously as they worked so well together as a team. I also loved the way CMH promotes Tasmanian produce and products. The food and wine were top class.

We experienced everything from sunshine to hail and a light dusting of snow, although were safely inside when it rained heavily. That enhanced the experience. Being autumn, the fungi was amazing.

My advice is, just do it. It's a wonderful experience, the camaraderie of the group was great, and we were well looked after in comfortable accommodation.
