Walk review from Linda Walton, Cradle Mountain / Overland Track

We came to Tasmania with a group of friends to do the Bay of Fires and Overland Track hikes.

I'll be turning 60 this month so it was my birthday treat. We were not disappointed.

The Bay of Fires showed us the wonderful coastal scenery of the East Coast and our Guides, Edie and Kyle were perfect. So knowledgeable and fun to be with. We saw an Elephant Seal which was having some time out of the water to moult in the sand dunes right by the tents on the first night. The spa lodge was beautiful and the views absolutely stunning. Being able to have a massage was just great to get all the muscles relaxed before our next hike. Watching the pademelons and other wildlife come to the spa gardens was very special. We even saw a joey in its mother's pouch. Kyle and Edie were really knowledgeable of the cultural history and flora and fauna, it was great to be taught so much.

Four of us then had 2 nights rest before we started the Overland Track. We hadn't done much training for this back in the UK and from the profile, we thought we should be OK with our fitness (we're regular hill walkers and fairly fit). We were but do not underestimate the weight of the back pack that you carry (approx 10kgs) or the weather. Both of these can have a huge impact on your fitness and capacity to do the hike. We were truly fortunate in that we had near perfect weather and apart from a few back aches, coped extremely well. One of our group was an 82 year old man from Japan. He used to be a mountaineer and it was really inspirational to see that he was as fit as us. Not all the group walked at the same pace but the guides coped with this well and it was no problem with having to wait a little as you could just breath and enjoy a mindful moment with the stunning scenery. The scenery was spectacular - incredible views over Tasmania and no sight of civilisation. Having the luxury of the huts each night was a real treat. The guides worked so hard from 6.30 to 10.30 each day. They provided us with yummy food and you felt safe with them around. Pat was only 21 but you knew if you got into any difficulty on the track that he'd be there to sort you out. Sanjay our other guide entertained us all the way. Great people skills but wearing crocs to squash a can.....?!

I would thoroughly recommend both hikes and TWC. The photos are a mix of BoF and Cradle Mountain
