Cradle Mountain / Overland Track    October 2015

Walk review from Caroline, Cradle Mountain / Overland Track Tasmania

My husband and I really enjoyed our 6 day Overland track walk to mark my 50th birthday.

Although reasonably fit I set off with some trepidation about how we would cope with the weather and track conditions. As it turned out we had the best weather - mostly warm (high 15) with clear blue skies (and consequent crisp frosty mornings). We did have half a day of snow and rain. Lunch at Mt Doris whilst it was snowing was challenging but beautiful.

Sanjay and Andy were knowledgeable hosts and keen to share their knowledge of the flora, fauna, history and geology of the area. They allowed the group to walk at our own pace - sometimes slower, sometimes faster and choice of side trips.

It was great to arrive at the toasty warm hut at the end of each day to the smell of freshly baked goodies. Then sit down and watch the sun set on the mountains from the deck or inside the hut. A hot shower and warm comfortable bed were great at the end of each day.

When we set out I thought I might loose a bit of weight walking all day and carrying a pack - I was wrong. Dinner was always varied delicious and accompanied by great Tassie wines and good conversation. Breakfast was generous and sustaining providing good fuel for each days walk. Each day there was freshly baked bread for toast and sandwiches (for lunch). At hot drink at lunch was always welcome.

I was surprised to receive a delicious chocolate cake with chocolate ganache, candles and sparkler on my birthday (prearranged by my hubby) but cooked freshly and secretly by Andy and Sanjay.

It was certainly a journey I will remember forever and highly recommend to anyone who will listen.
