Bay of Fires Named Australia’s Best Beach
If squeaky white-sand beaches and wild coastline appeal to you, the Bay of Fires is a spectacular reason to lace up your walking boots. Tourism Australia has just named it the best beach in the country, and we couldn’t agree more. With its iconic lichen-covered boulders, pristine shores, and crystal-clear waters, this stretch of Tasmania’s east coast is nothing short of breathtaking. And there’s no better way to experience its beauty than on foot.

Bay of Fires Signature Walk
Day 1: Welcome & Settle In
Your adventure begins just outside of Launceston in the township of Hadspen, where you’ll meet your fellow walkers over dinner. You’ll spend your first night at the historic Red Feather Inn, a boutique accommodation offering a warm and inviting start to your journey.
Day 2: Into the Wild
We set off towards Mt William National Park, the northern gateway to the Bay of Fires. Starting our walk at Boulder Point, we trek for four hours along windswept beaches and dramatic coastline before arriving at Forester Camp. Nestled among the dunes, this is no ordinary campsite—after a refreshing ocean dip, you’ll unwind with a glass of Tasmanian pinot as a delicious meal is prepared.
Day 3: Secluded Coves & Storytelling
Today, we explore the hidden gems of the Bay of Fires. You’ll hear tales of the area’s deep history, from First Nations inhabitants to European explorers, as we traverse pristine beaches and rocky headlands. By late afternoon, we arrive at the Bay of Fires Lodge, your luxurious retreat for the next two nights. Here, foot spas, a well-stocked library, and a signature outdoor bath experience await.
Day 4: Paddle or Pause
This is a day to choose your own adventure. For the active, a kayaking journey down the tranquil Ansons River offers a unique perspective of the surrounding wilderness. Or, if deep relaxation is calling, embrace a slow-paced ‘lodge day’—perhaps with a spa treatment or simply soaking up the serenity from the deck.
Day 5: A Grand Finale
The final morning begins with a hearty breakfast before we take a short one-hour walk to our secluded forest lunch location. Here, we’ll enjoy a celebratory meal together before making our way back to the walker base, reflecting on five unforgettable days in this world-class landscape.
Private Eco-Accommodation
Throughout your journey, you’ll experience a balance of wilderness and comfort. Our Bay of Fires Lodge, Tasmania’s only private accommodation within the conservation area, offers a sustainable yet indulgent retreat. Elevated above the landscape with panoramic views, the lodge is solar-powered, designed with minimal environmental impact, and seamlessly blends into its surroundings.
After a day of walking, unwind in the outdoor bath, indulge in a lodge spa treatment, or sip a local wine while watching the sunset over the vast, untouched coastline.
