Bruny Island Foodie Paradise on Foot with Tasmanian Walking Company
Did you know: 362 square kilometres make up Bruny Island - that’s roughly three-fifths the size of Christchurch, yet only 0.2% of the population.
What’s even more impressive is that on an island with only approximately 1,000 permanent inhabitants, you’ll find over 10+ world-class producers, many of whom earn national and international awards for their produce.
Our Bruny Island Long Weekend Itinerary is designed to be calorie-neutral, meaning any calories you burn while hiking across white, sandy beaches and green-caked rainforest will be put back on tasting Bruny Island produce that’s so fresh, it’s measured by food metres, not miles.
Farm-To-Table: Gourmet Highlights of the Walk
Bruny Island Cheese Co.
Don’t let the name Bruny Island Cheese Co. deceive you - while you will find an impressive variety of award-winning cheese in their bushland home off Main Road, there’s also craft beer, condiments and woodfire-baked goods to tantalise your tastebuds.
10 years working with specialist cheese makers preceded Nick opening Bruny Island Cheese Co, meaning an accumulative 32 years of experience have gone into perfecting his O.D.O, Saint, 1792, Smoked Truckle and Nanna’s Undies cheese varieties (to name a few). Similar attention to detail went into the brewing of their craft beer collection, including a cool pale ale, cloudy IPA, Farm Ale, Black Pudding stout or Rambles beer, all brewed on site.
Our Long Weekend walkers become well familiar with Bruny Island Cheese Co.’s selection as they’re the centrepiece of the cheeseboard that awaits guests each evening.
Bruny Island Game Meats
Spend time on Bruny Island and you’ll understand why the label ‘premium’ fits the quality of meats produced by Bruny Island Game Meats, a family-owned business based in Great Bay, Bruny Island.
The undisturbed wild areas of Bruny provide nutrient-dense food sources for the plentiful wallabies that graze there, which makes their wallaby meat “high in iron, hormone-free and wild-harvested on local properties”. This freshness is reflected in the taste. As multiple Harvey Norman Produce Award winners, it’s no surprise that wallaby serves as a staple source of protein in dinners on the Bruny Island Long Weekend experience.
Bruny Island Berry Farm
To those with a taste for sweet and succulent berries, Bruny Island Berry Farm is a must for the itinerary. Strawberries are their signature berry, which you can pick yourself or purchase ready to eat by the carton. Strawberries aren’t your thing? Try their raspberries, blackberries, boysenberries, blueberries, youngberries or jostaberries instead.
After foraging the fields for your perfect punnet, refuel in their café on berry tasty ice cream varieties, pancakes, scones and coffee. Don’t forget to visit their gift shop and browse their selection of candles, confectionery, jams and items of interest - authentic gifts for the folks at home. Just be sure to time your visit from September to May as they close over the winter months.
Get Shucked Oyster Farm
The word ‘fresh’ often precedes oysters on restaurant menus, but day one of the Bruny Island Long Weekend teaches you the true meaning of fresh. Day one includes a visit to Get Shucked Oysters in Great Bay, where you’ll wade out into crystal clear waters right up to the farm, learn all about producing the perfect oyster and shuck them right there in the water.
Get Shucked chose their position in Great Bay strategically so their oysters could feed on the nutrient-rich waters that wash through their bay. The result? Delicious 70mm+ nuggets of briny meat that’s full-bodied with a perfect sweet and salty flavour profile. Should you be craving fresh oysters post-walk, Get Shucked opens from 9:30am - 4:30pm daily to serve shucking good oysters.
Bruny Island Premium Wines
What does a delicious drop from Australia’s most southern vineyard taste like? Join our Bruny Island Long Weekend to find out. Bruny Island Premium Wines has just shy of 30 years of winemaking history informing the vinification of its numerous whites, reds and cider. And it shows - each grape is hand-picked, pressed immediately to preserve freshness and fermented slowly to enrich its aromatics, resulting in a zingy, slightly mineral undertone with a clean and soft finish.
Each evening, Bruny Island Premium Wines complement our guests’ dinners and are the catalyst for strangers turning into close friends.
