Former television host and media personality Mark Beretta was a first-time hiker when he joined our Three Capes Signature Walk recently. Here, he shares a snapshot of the experience - from echidnas to beef curry to feeling refreshed and excited for more adventure.
What were your expectations of a five-day hike on the edge of the world?
I was planning on some long relaxing walking days, although I knew some of it would be tough, and some fairly nice scenery, with hopefully a few wildlife encounters.
What was your favourite moment of this Tasmanian hike?
That’s an unfair question – there were so many great memories! I think experiencing it together as a couple was really special. Climbing ‘the blade’ was incredible when you think that you are perched on a towering rock and a few metres either side of you there’s a 150-metre drop to the ocean below and the most incredible views of the coastline north and south. I had never seen echidnas in the wild so seeing so many (8!) was a highlight. Glad I took so many photos because I keep looking back and saying “Wow” that amazing! There was a tremendous sense of accomplishment in finishing the walk at one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches, but also a tinge of sadness that this great experience was over. I loved it!
What was your favourite meal?
Well I do like food, beef cheek curry was a big hit!
What did you learn along the way?
So much about Tassie, the coastline, the shipwrecks, the wildlife and the bush. But I also learned to hike. This was my first time, and I survived, and even more than that, loved it! Now I want more. We also had a great group that made it even more fun.
Advice to people considering the Three Capes or another multi day walk?
Get the most comfortable shoes you can find that will do the job, and look after your feet. It’s a long walk and a lot of up and down. Wear your shoes a lot before you go. Most importantly, allow yourself to fall right into the beauty of Tasmania. Look around, take it in, listen to the quiet, and breathe. It is so refreshing for the soul.
