Bruny Island, a food lover’s paradise.
Bruny Island is arguably best known for its rugged landscape, secluded beaches, an array of wildlife inhabitants and of course the infamous ‘neck’ lookout. At around 50km in length from north to south, visitors are often surprised by the island’s sheer size and the subsequent array of stunning flora and fauna at every turn. But did you know this expansive paradise provides quite the adventure for your tastebuds too?
Though only a mere 25 kilometres down the Derwent River from Hobart, it’s easy to feel like you are miles away once you step foot onto the island which is home to an abundance of food producers, growers and artisans. The food on Bruny Island sets the standard for paddock to plate (and even sea to plate) with often only mere meters between where the food is grown or produced, to where it is available for consumption.
In fact, take part in our Bruny Island Long Weekend itinerary and not only will you experience trekking through the rainforest, across rocky headlands and along secluded beaches, you will also have the opportunity shuck fresher-than-fresh oysters whilst standing in the crystal clear waters of the very bay where they are farmed (aptly named, ‘Great Bay’). This unique and unforgettable experience takes place on the very first day of our walking journey, as we combine the very best scenery and walks on the island with a menu featuring many ingredients that are grown and produced locally on the island.
Notable producers on the island include the renowned Bruny Island Cheese Co., a cheese lover's paradise tucked away in the bush just off the main road. Here you’ll find standout, high-quality artisan cheeses and a range of craft beer to wash it down. Not far from there, you’ll stumble across Bruny Island Game Meats who provide locally sourced premium meat products to various outlets across the island. The Bruny Island Berry Farm has all your berry cravings covered with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and boysenberries all grown onsite. Last but not least, Bruny Island Premium Wines is a must 'taste' destination whilst perusing Bruny Island.
One of the things that we particularly love about Bruny, is that it is truly an experience for all the senses. From taking in vast ocean views with nothing separating you from where you stand and Antarctica, to breathing in the salty air and tasting & sipping produce that is the epitome of fresh and local. Where else can you feel so incredibly far away, yet be so close to the very place that your food or wine is being grown and made? We guarantee that by the end of this trip, you’ll feel that you have experienced Bruny Island in its entirety.
There is a reason that Bruny Island has intrigued and delighted so many over recent years, and we think that just maybe it has a little something to do with the wonderful concoction of exquisite foodie experiences and amazing natural wonders paired with feeling like you are a million miles away. If you’d like to experience it too, why not join us for a Bruny Island Long Weekend adventure? We promise your work desk or home office will be feeling like a distant memory in no time.
