We've been busy!
While walking seasons ebb and flow, the Tasmanian Walking Company Foundation (TWCF) has only heated up as we move through winter. From im-peck-able visits to Raptor Refuge, preparations for a salty cleaning job and the renewal of a partnership with Tasmania’s wildlife first responders, here’s an update on TWCF’s activity in 2025.
What is the Tasmanian Walking Company Foundation?
Tasmanian Walking Company Foundation is Tasmanian Walking Company’s not-for-profit entity. TWCF aims to deepen people's connection with nature and cultivate real change with a boots-on-the-ground approach.
TWC and Australian Walking Company would be nothing without the jaw-dropping wilderness our multi-day walks wind through, so the TWCF supports projects that restore balance to threatened ecosystems, protect vulnerable native animals and promote sustainable use of wilderness areas.
Ruffling feathers at Raptor Refuge
No one likes having their wings clipped. Especially the incredible birds of prey that inhabit Tasmania’s national parks. Raptor Refuge in Kettering tackles this problem beak-on by providing care, rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned birds of prey.
Founded by Craig Webb OAM, who was recently awarded the Medal of the Order for service to wildlife conservation in The King’s Birthday 2025 Honours list, Raptor Refuge is a testament to the power of grassroots conservation. Craig hopes this recognition will help amplify his work, and it couldn’t come at a more critical time.
Raptor Refuge’s 20-acre facility holds Australia’s largest flight aviary, but sadly, this isn’t enough to support the increasing number of raptors needing rehabilitation and care after sustaining human-induced injuries. Thanks to your support, the TWCF has helped Raptor Refuge expand its aviaries to manage increasing demand, including funding a new 7m slatted aviary.
Our team recently got up close and personal with our feathery friends at Raptor Refuge, and we’re proud to continue supporting Raptor Refuge through FY26.
Visiting Raptor Refuge
Sea Splurge Clean Up
We’re nearing the 11th annual Larapuna Community Weekend at the Bay of Fires, where over 100 volunteers, including our guides, flock to the beach to get their hands dirty removing harmful sea spurge infestations along the shoreline.
There’s little to like about sea splurge – it’s a toxic weed that outcompetes native flora and fauna and it invades nesting sites for native shorebirds and penguins, threatening population numbers. Removing sea splurge is a delicate task, as when it’s damaged, it releases toxic white latex that can cause skin and eye irritation to both animals and humans.
Our team and community volunteers removed as many as 46,000 plants in previous weekends (along with plenty of marine debris), and we have our sights set on even greater figures this year.
To keep the numerous community groups participating in the clean-up fuelled, TWCF will once again provide logistical support and hold a large community dinner on Saturday evening. Be the first to hear event details for this year’s Community Weekend by joining the Wildcare Friends of Larapuna Coast group.
Wildcare Ongoing Partnership
Scary statistics like Australia recording the world’s fastest rate of mammal extinctions and Tasmania losing more than 500,000 animals to car strikes in a single year spurred Wildcare and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary into action in 2010. The result? A 24-hour wildlife rescue service that provides safety and care to thousands of animals every year.
This service is made possible by trained community rescuers, devoted wildlife carers and volunteers who are on-call to help. Interested members receive free training to help our wildlife, and that’s where we’re proud to leave our mark – by funding and supporting wildlife rescue training and education activities. We’re delighted to renew our partnership with Wildcare and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in FY26, which you can read more about here.
